Location of ATMs

Automated Teller Machines (ATMs) are designed to provide convenient access to banking services and can be installed in a wide variety of locations. Their placement depends on customer needs, accessibility, and the availability of banking services in a particular area. By installing ATMs at strategic locations, financial institutions ensure that customers can perform essential banking transactions such as cash withdrawals, deposits, and balance inquiries quickly and conveniently.

ATMs are most commonly installed inside or near bank branches, where they complement traditional banking services. However, they are also widely placed in busy public areas to make banking services available beyond normal banking hours.

Common locations for ATMs include shopping centers, airports, railway stations, metro stations, grocery stores, petrol stations (gas stations), restaurants, and many other public places with high customer traffic. In addition, ATMs are also available on cruise ships and on certain United States Navy ships, allowing passengers and sailors to access their money even while at sea.

On-Premises and Off-Premises ATMs

ATMs are generally classified into On-Premises ATMs and Off-Premises ATMs, depending on where they are installed and the range of services they provide.

On-Premises ATMs

On-Premises ATMs are installed inside bank branches or immediately outside bank premises. These machines are usually equipped with advanced features and support multiple banking functions in addition to basic cash withdrawals.

Because they complement the services offered by bank branches, On-Premises ATMs are generally more sophisticated and more expensive than simpler ATM models. They may support services such as cash deposits, fund transfers, account inquiries, cheque deposits, and other banking transactions.

Off-Premises ATMs

Off-Premises ATMs are installed at locations away from bank branches, primarily to provide customers with convenient access to cash in public places.

These machines are usually deployed where there is a high demand for cash withdrawal services but where establishing a full bank branch would not be practical. Off-Premises ATMs are generally single-function or limited-function machines, making them less expensive than On-Premises ATMs.

Many Off-Premises ATMs are also installed and maintained by independent ATM operators that are not directly affiliated with banks. Such machines are commonly known as White-Label ATMs.

Drive-Through ATMs

In countries such as the United States, Canada, and some Gulf countries, banks often provide drive-through ATMs.

These ATMs are installed in specially designed lanes that allow customers to perform banking transactions without leaving their vehicles. Drive-through ATMs improve convenience, reduce waiting time, and are especially useful during adverse weather conditions or for customers with limited mobility.

Solar-Powered ATMs

To expand banking services in remote and rural areas where a reliable electricity supply may not be available, several countries have started installing solar-powered ATMs.

Countries such as India and several African nations have adopted this technology to improve financial inclusion. Solar-powered ATMs use electricity generated from solar panels, allowing them to operate even in locations with limited or unreliable power infrastructure.

These ATMs help extend banking services to underserved communities while reducing dependence on conventional electricity sources.

World’s Highest ATM

The world’s highest ATM is located at the Khunjerab Pass in Gilgit-Baltistan, Pakistan.

This ATM was installed by the National Bank of Pakistan (NBP) at an elevation of 4,693 metres (15,397 feet) above sea level, making it the highest operational ATM in the world.

Because of its high-altitude location, the ATM is specially designed to operate under extremely harsh environmental conditions. It can function even when temperatures fall to −40°C, ensuring that residents, travelers, and security personnel in the region have access to essential banking services throughout the year.
