Global Use of ATMs

Automated Teller Machines (ATMs) are widely used across the world and have become an essential part of modern banking. They provide customers with convenient access to cash and various banking services without requiring them to visit a bank branch. Although ATMs are available in almost every country, their number and usage vary depending on factors such as population, banking infrastructure, technological development, and the popularity of digital payment systems.

There is no single international organization or government agency that maintains an official count of all ATMs installed worldwide. Therefore, global ATM figures are generally based on estimates prepared by organizations involved in the ATM industry.

According to estimates published by the ATM Industry Association (ATMIA), there were approximately 3 million ATMs operating around the world in 2015. This was equivalent to roughly one ATM for every 3,000 people worldwide, highlighting the extensive reach of ATM services across the global banking system.

Global Distribution of ATMs

To better understand ATM usage and banking trends, financial institutions commonly divide the world into seven geographical regions. This classification helps compare ATM availability, customer usage patterns, and the adoption of new banking technologies in different parts of the world.

Several developed regions, including the United States, Canada, Europe, and Japan, have a very high number of ATMs relative to their population. These regions generally have well-established banking systems, widespread financial inclusion, and extensive ATM networks.

Despite already having a large number of ATMs, demand for additional machines has continued in rapidly developing regions such as Asia-Pacific and Latin America, where expanding populations and increasing banking services have created a growing need for convenient cash access.

Regional ATM Trends

RegionATM Availability
United StatesHigh number of ATMs per million people.
CanadaExtensive ATM network with high accessibility.
EuropeWell-developed ATM infrastructure across many countries.
JapanHigh ATM penetration and advanced banking technology.
Asia-PacificGrowing demand for additional ATM installations.
Latin AmericaIncreasing ATM deployment due to expanding banking services.

ATM Density

ATM density refers to the number of ATMs available relative to the adult population and is commonly measured as the number of ATMs per 100,000 adults.

One of the highest ATM densities in the world has been recorded in Macau, where there are approximately 254 ATMs for every 100,000 adults. This high concentration reflects the region’s strong banking infrastructure and the large number of residents and visitors who require convenient access to cash.

Impact of Cashless Payments

During the late 2010s, the rapid adoption of cashless payment systems began to change the way people conducted financial transactions. Digital payment methods such as mobile wallets, contactless cards, internet banking, QR code payments, and other electronic payment solutions became increasingly popular.

As more consumers started using these cashless payment options, the demand for cash transactions gradually decreased. This change led to a reduction in both the number of ATMs and their usage in many developed countries.

The decline first became noticeable in regions where ATM networks were already well established, while countries in Asia and Africa continued expanding their ATM infrastructure to improve banking access for growing populations.

Recent Global ATM Trends

The global number of ATMs has gradually declined in recent years as digital payment technologies continue to gain popularity.

By 2021, the worldwide average number of ATMs had decreased to approximately 39 ATMs per 100,000 adults, compared with a peak of 41 ATMs per 100,000 adults recorded in 2020.

Although the overall number of ATMs has declined globally, they continue to play an important role in providing access to cash, especially in regions where cash remains a widely used method of payment or where digital banking infrastructure is still developing.
