Uses of an ATM

Automated Teller Machines (ATMs) were originally developed to allow customers to withdraw cash without visiting a bank branch. Over time, advances in banking technology have transformed ATMs into multifunctional self-service banking terminals capable of performing a wide range of financial and non-financial services. Today, ATMs help customers complete many routine transactions quickly and conveniently, reducing the need to visit a bank counter.

Banking Services Provided by ATMs

Modern ATMs offer numerous banking services in addition to cash withdrawals. These services allow customers to manage their accounts independently at any time of the day.

Customers can use ATMs to pay routine bills, government fees, taxes, utility bills, telephone bills, social security payments, legal fees, and income taxes where such services are supported by the banking network.

Many ATMs also allow customers to print bank statements, request account statements, and update passbooks, enabling users to keep track of their financial transactions without visiting a branch.

ATMs support cash advances, allowing eligible customers to withdraw funds using approved credit facilities. Some machines are equipped with Cheque Processing Modules, enabling customers to deposit cheques electronically.

Customers can also use ATMs to pay their credit card outstanding balance, either partially or in full, when the credit card is linked to their bank account.

Fund transfer services allow money to be transferred between linked accounts, such as transferring funds between savings and current accounts.

Many modern ATMs also include currency recognition, cash acceptance, and cash recycling technologies. These systems automatically identify deposited banknotes, verify their authenticity, and, in some cases, reuse deposited notes for future cash withdrawals.

Additional Services in Integrated Banking Networks

In countries with highly integrated cross-bank ATM networks, ATMs provide many services beyond traditional banking.

For example, Multibanco, the integrated ATM network in Portugal, offers a wide variety of additional services through ATMs.

Customers may be able to:

  • Load money onto stored-value cards.
  • Recharge prepaid mobile phone accounts.
  • Purchase various products and services directly from the ATM.

These additional services expand the role of ATMs beyond basic banking and make them convenient self-service kiosks.

ATMs as Sales and Marketing Platforms

Banks are increasingly using ATMs as sales and marketing channels rather than limiting them to traditional banking services.

Modern ATM software can identify customers who qualify for pre-approved loans, allowing the machine to display personalized loan offers during transactions.

Banks also use ATMs to present targeted advertisements and promotional messages based on customer profiles and banking relationships.

Some advanced ATM platforms, such as Intelligent Teller Machines (ITMs), provide enhanced customer interaction while serving as marketing tools for financial products.

In addition to promoting banking services, ATMs may also display advertisements for products and services offered by other companies, creating an additional source of revenue for ATM operators.

Emerging ATM Technologies

ATM technology continues to evolve, with several advanced features being introduced in different parts of the world. Although many of these technologies are already in use in certain countries, they have not yet achieved universal adoption.

Video Teller Services

Some ATMs support videoconferencing with live bank employees, allowing customers to communicate directly with a human teller while using the ATM.

These systems are commonly referred to as Video Teller Machines or Interactive Teller Machines (ITMs). Through live video communication, customers can receive assistance with more complex banking transactions that cannot be completed through a standard ATM interface.

Biometric Authentication

Biometric technology enables ATMs to verify customer identity using physical characteristics instead of relying solely on cards and PINs.

Biometric authentication methods include:

  • Fingerprint recognition
  • Iris recognition
  • Facial recognition

These technologies provide an additional layer of security and help reduce the risk of unauthorized account access.

Envelope-Free Cash and Cheque Deposits

Many modern ATMs can now accept and recognize cash and cheques directly, eliminating the need for deposit envelopes.

The ATM automatically identifies the deposited currency or cheque, verifies the amount, and processes the transaction electronically.

This technology has become increasingly important in countries such as the United States, particularly following the implementation of Check 21 legislation, which encourages electronic cheque processing.

Barcode Scanning

Some ATMs include barcode scanners, allowing customers to pay bills or complete transactions by scanning barcodes printed on invoices or payment documents.

On-Demand Printing

Certain ATMs are capable of printing items of value on demand, such as:

  • Movie tickets
  • Traveller’s cheques
  • Other authorized documents

Dispensing Additional Media

Some ATM models can dispense products other than cash, including telephone cards and similar prepaid media.

Mobile Phone Integration

Modern ATMs increasingly integrate with mobile banking applications, allowing customers to authenticate transactions or access banking services using their smartphones.

Integration with Other Equipment

Advanced ATM systems can communicate with non-banking equipment, enabling additional self-service applications beyond traditional financial transactions.

Games and Promotional Features

Some ATMs include games, promotional campaigns, reward programs, and interactive marketing features designed to improve customer engagement and encourage the use of banking services.

Customer Relationship Management (CRM)

Banks are also using ATMs as part of their Customer Relationship Management (CRM) strategy by delivering personalized offers, targeted promotions, and customized financial services based on customer preferences.

Interactive Teller Machines (ITMs)

Modern Interactive Teller Machines (ITMs) combine the convenience of ATMs with the assistance of live bank employees through video communication.

These machines allow customers to interact with a remote teller using real-time video conferencing, enabling assistance with more complex banking services while maintaining the convenience of self-service banking.

The software supporting many Interactive Teller Machines was originally developed by uGenius, a company specializing in video banking solutions. In 2013, NCR Corporation acquired uGenius and integrated its video banking software with NCR’s ATM hardware, helping expand the adoption of Interactive Teller Machines.

Pharmacy Dispensing Units

In addition to banking applications, ATM-style self-service technology has also been adapted for pharmacy dispensing units.

These automated systems allow authorized users to obtain prescribed medications through secure dispensing machines, demonstrating how ATM technology has been extended beyond the financial sector into healthcare and other industries.
