What is NITI Aayog?
The NITI Aayog (National Institution for Transforming India) is the main policy think tank of the Government of India.
π In simple words, it helps the government:
- Make better policies
- Plan economic development
- Work together with states
Main Purpose
NITI Aayog works to:
- Promote economic growth and development
- Encourage cooperative federalism (Centre and States working together)
- Use a bottom-up approach (taking ideas from states and local levels)
π This is different from the old system where decisions were mostly taken at the top.
Formation of NITI Aayog
- It was established on 1 January 2015
- It replaced the Planning Commission
- The decision was taken by the NDA government
Why was Planning Commission replaced?
- It followed a top-down approach
- It was considered outdated in a modern and diverse economy
- A single plan could not suit all states
π So, a more flexible and modern system (NITI Aayog) was introduced.
