Related Devices

Several devices have been developed using technology similar to Automated Teller Machines (ATMs). While these machines may share many hardware components and communication systems with ATMs, they are designed to perform specialized functions based on specific customer or business requirements. Some devices focus on improving accessibility, while others provide postal services, cash dispensing alternatives, or online banking facilities.

Talking ATM

A Talking ATM is a specially designed ATM that provides audible instructions to customers. It is primarily intended to help people who are visually impaired or unable to read the information displayed on the screen.

Instead of relying solely on visual menus, the machine guides users through every step of the transaction using spoken instructions. This enables customers to use the ATM independently without requiring assistance from another person, thereby improving both accessibility and privacy.

Most Talking ATMs deliver audio instructions through a standard headphone jack located on the front of the machine. When customers connect their headphones, all information is played privately so that sensitive banking details cannot be overheard by others.

Some banks, such as Nordea and Swedbank, also provide Talking ATMs equipped with a built-in external speaker. Customers can activate the voice guidance by pressing a dedicated Talk button on the keypad.

The spoken instructions may be delivered through:

  • Pre-recorded audio files
  • Text-to-Speech (TTS) speech synthesis technology

Postal Interactive Kiosk

A Postal Interactive Kiosk is a self-service machine that shares several hardware components with an ATM, including secure storage areas and user interface devices.

However, instead of providing banking services, it is specifically designed to offer postal services.

A Postal Interactive Kiosk dispenses products and services related to postage, allowing customers to complete certain postal transactions without visiting a staffed service counter.

Although it may include hardware similar to an ATM, its functions are limited to postal operations rather than financial transactions.

Scrip Cash Dispenser

A Scrip Cash Dispenser, also known as a Cashless ATM, resembles a conventional ATM in many respects but differs in one important aspect—it does not dispense physical cash.

Since no cash is stored inside the machine, it does not require a secure cash vault.

When a customer requests a withdrawal, the machine prints a receipt or scrip instead of dispensing money.

The customer then presents this printed receipt to a nearby cashier or sales clerk, who exchanges it for cash from the cash register or till.

This approach allows businesses to offer ATM-like withdrawal services without maintaining cash inside the machine itself.

Working of a Scrip Cash Dispenser

StepProcess
1Customer requests a cash withdrawal.
2The machine prints a receipt or scrip instead of dispensing cash.
3The customer presents the printed receipt to a nearby cashier.
4The cashier exchanges the receipt for cash from the till.

Teller Assist Unit (TAU)

A Teller Assist Unit (TAU) is another device related to ATM technology, but it is designed specifically for bank employees rather than customers.

Unlike an ATM, a Teller Assist Unit cannot be operated by the general public. It is intended to be used only by trained banking personnel.

The TAU connects directly to interbank networks, allowing bank staff to perform various financial transactions efficiently.

Unlike a conventional ATM, the computer controlling a Teller Assist Unit is generally separate from the physical machine, providing greater flexibility for branch operations and integration with internal banking systems.

Features of a Teller Assist Unit

FeatureDescription
UserOperated only by trained bank personnel.
Public AccessNot intended for customer use.
Network ConnectivityDirectly connected to interbank networks.
Computer ControlControlled by an external computer system rather than being fully integrated into the unit.

Web ATM

A Web ATM is an online banking interface that allows customers to perform many ATM-related functions using a computer connected to the internet.

Instead of visiting a physical ATM, customers access banking services through a secure website and use a smart card reader connected to their computer for authentication.

Most of the services available at a traditional ATM can also be performed through a Web ATM, including:

  • Balance inquiries
  • Fund transfers
  • Account information
  • Other banking transactions

However, because customers use the service remotely, cash withdrawal is not possible through a Web ATM.

This type of service has been widely adopted by several banks in Taiwan, where customers can perform ATM-style banking transactions conveniently from home or the office.
