The classification of Indian cities is a ranking system used by the Government of India to determine the allocation of House Rent Allowance (HRA) for public servants employed in various cities. HRA is also utilized by the Indian Revenue Service (IRS) to offer income tax exemptions. Cities are classified based on their population, as per recommendations from the Sixth Central Pay Commission. According to the most recent HRA city ranking scheme, the media and cultural sectors primarily recognize Tier-X cities as metropolitan. These eight cities are regarded as India’s “metros.”
